Your entire savings could be gone with a single message! A major danger for retirees

On June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the need to protect elderly individuals against economic exploitation is being emphasized. This special day, designated by the United Nations, aims to draw attention to the abuse and mistreatment of the elderly.

Zekeriya Öztürk, Chairman of the Board of the Financial Literacy and Inclusion Association (FODER), stated that retirees live on fixed incomes and highlighted the importance of budget management and safe investing. Öztürk noted that with the advancement of technology, fraud methods have also increased, and therefore, elderly individuals must be cautious.

MEASURES TO BE TAKEN AGAINST ECONOMIC EXPLOITATION

Levent Küçük, Chairman of the Consumers Association (TÜDER), stated that all age groups must be protected against digital fraud. Emphasizing that consumers need to be conscious, especially in banking transactions, Küçük also said that banks must strengthen their digital infrastructure. He noted that security measures such as two-factor authentication codes or the approval of relatives could be effective for individuals over the age of 50.

Alpaslan Çakar, Chairman of the Board of the Banks Association of Turkey (TBB), announced that they have prepared various training programs to ensure the safety of elderly individuals during the banking sector's digitalization process. Çakar stated that financial security is the responsibility of individuals as well as banks, and pointed out the importance of users ensuring their own personal security.

While Öztürk recommended the FinKurs platform to increase citizens' financial literacy, Küçük stated that mobile operators should take measures against harmful advertisements and SMS messages. Çakar noted that the digital training series prepared by the TBB will help elderly individuals become aware of the fraud methods they may encounter in digital banking transactions.

With these proposals and measures to be taken, the goal is to better protect elderly individuals against economic exploitation.
