2-month-old baby died of starvation in Fatih: Chilling confession from the mother

The incident that occurred on December 30 in Istanbul's Fatih district shocked both medical teams and the public. After mother Y.Y. called the 112 Emergency Call Center stating that her 2-month-old baby was not breathing, medical teams arrived at the home to find that the baby had passed away. The investigation following the baby's death revealed that the circumstances were suspicious.

BABY'S WEIGHT DROPPED AFTER BIRTH

The baby, who was born at 3.2 kilograms on November 5 at Istanbul Training and Research Hospital, lost their life just 55 days later. An examination conducted after the incident determined that the baby had experienced rapid weight loss in the days leading up to their death and that there was a caving in of the abdominal area after birth. It was understood that the baby's weight had dropped to 2 kilograms and that they had not been fed prior to their death.

“I DID NOT FEED THE BABY FOR 3 DAYS”

In her statements, mother Y.Y. indicated that she had not fed the baby for the last three days, saying, “My baby died yesterday.” Mother Y.Y., the baby's father B.Y., the grandmother A.Y., and the grandfather Y.E.Y. were taken into custody due to the suspicious death. Following questioning, all four suspects were arrested on charges of “intentional homicide.”

“WE LEFT THE BABY ON THE BED AFTER THEY DIED”

The statement given by mother Y.Y. formed the most striking part of the investigation. Y.Y. made the chilling statement: “When the baby stopped breathing, we did not intervene in any way. After we realized the baby had died, we left them on the bed, then we prepared a meal and ate.”

“MY FATHER WAS DELIBERATELY STARVING THE BABY”

Y.Y. claimed that the baby had recently been suffering from constant lethargy and weight loss, which she attributed to a lack of nutrition. Stating, “For the last three days, my father did not feed my baby at all. I did not force the baby because they did not want to take formula,” Y.Y. alleged that her father, who had taken over the baby's care, was responsible for the baby being starved. The mother said, “When I asked my father, 'Why aren't you feeding the baby?', he would say, 'It makes no difference to me, let them die.'”

I REALIZED I WAS PREGNANT WHEN MY HUSBAND LEFT

Y.Y. also provided striking information regarding her pregnancy. Stating that she met her husband on social media and that they began living together shortly after, Y.Y. said, "I suspected I was pregnant, and because I was afraid to tell my mother, I got help from my aunt." Y.Y. also stated that she went to the hospital regularly throughout her pregnancy and moved in with her father after giving birth.

The contradictory and suspicious elements in the statements of Y.Y. and her family led to a deepening of the investigation. Suspicious behaviors, such as the family members waiting a long time before calling for medical teams after the baby's death and the father, who had assumed responsibility for the baby, preventing them from being fed, were questioned by judicial authorities.

FAMILY MEMBERS ARRESTED

At the conclusion of the investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, mother Y.Y., father B.Y., grandmother A.Y., and grandfather Y.E.Y. were arrested on charges of “intentional homicide.” The examinations conducted regarding the incident and the statements of the family members led to the further deepening of the investigation and the progression of the judicial process.
