Fired shots into the air after protest: 1 person lost their life

Fired shots into the air after protest: 1 person lost their life

According to a statement released by the Mersin Governor's Office, shots were fired into the air from a building as a crowd was dispersing following a protest in the Tarsus district of Mersin. B.A., a Syrian national located in a different building, was struck by gunfire and lost their life.

The Governor's Office issued the following statement regarding the incident:

"On 25.01.2026, at approximately 19:00, an unauthorized demonstration was held in the Gazipaşa neighborhood of our Tarsus district, organized by the DEM Party Tarsus District Presidency, with the participation of approximately 100 people to protest the events occurring in Syria; the crowd dispersed at approximately 20:20 following negotiations.

Following the conclusion of the unauthorized demonstration, a dispute arose between a homeowner and a group of individuals after the group entered the garden of a house, and the homeowner fired shots into the air. After the shots were fired into the air, a bullet struck B.A. (born in Aleppo in 2002), a Syrian national who was on the balcony of the building across the street, and they lost their life at the hospital to which they were taken.

Following the incident, individuals named H.K. and his son A.K., who fired into the air, were apprehended along with the weapon and taken into custody, and the investigation is being conducted meticulously.
