His gesture became one of the symbolic images of the earthquake. That firefighter has passed away
Kürşat Aydın, a firefighter from Merzifon, Amasya, whose act of taking off his own boots and putting them on an elderly man he rescued from the rubble of a building destroyed by the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş became a viral image, has been found dead at his home in Samsun. The sudden death of 43-year-old Aydın, who never wore those boots—the symbol of the earthquake—again, has left his loved ones in his hometown in mourning. Merzifon Mayor Alp Kargı shared his condolences in a message.
The incident occurred in the Yeni neighborhood of the Atakum district in Samsun. According to the information obtained, Kürşat Aydın, who worked as a firefighter for the Merzifon Municipality in the Merzifon district of Amasya, was found lying motionless on the floor of the bathroom in his home in Samsun by his wife, Mine Aydın, who is a pharmaceutical representative. Police and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene.
Upon examination, it was determined that Kürşat Aydın had passed away at the scene. After the prosecutor's investigation at the scene, Aydın's body was sent to the Samsun Group Presidency of the Council of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy. It was learned that the exact cause of death will be determined by the autopsy results. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

HE RESCUED AN ELDERLY MAN ALIVE AFTER 36 HOURS
Following the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, which affected 11 provinces, the Merzifon Municipality fire brigade teams, who quickly traveled from the Merzifon district of Amasya to Kahramanmaraş, rescued an elderly man alive from the rubble of an apartment building that collapsed on Trabzon Street after 36 hours. At that moment, firefighter Kürşat Aydın took off his own boots and put them on the elderly man, whom he saw was barefoot.

He warmed hearts once again with his response to the elderly man, who was surprised while putting on the boots and asked, "What will you do?": "Don't worry about us. We'll manage somehow." Kürşat Aydın, who explained that they couldn't even ask the name of the elderly man due to the intensity of the rescue efforts, and that the man returned the boots a few hours later, had said, "I haven't worn my boots since that day. They are kept at our Fire Department. They became the symbol of the earthquake for us."
