Man throws flammable substance at building where ex-wife lives and flees

The incident occurred around 19:00 in a 4-story building on 2850th Street in the Esentepe neighborhood of Istanbul's Sultangazi district. According to allegations, a man named Bahadır A. entered the building where his ex-wife, Nevin D., lives. The individual set fire to a flammable substance he was carrying, threw it into the building's stairwell, closed the door, and fled the scene.

As materials in the building's stairwell caught fire, smoke spread to the upper floors. Upon notification, fire, police, and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. While firefighters rescued citizens trapped in the building, 7 people were affected by smoke, 3 of whom are in critical condition. The injured were taken to the hospital by ambulance after initial intervention by medical teams. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by the intervention of the fire department. The treatment of those affected by smoke continues at the hospital. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Speaking about the incident, Nevin D.'s brother, Kemal D., said, "He was constantly making threats. Today, he threatened us again, saying 'I will burn your house, I will burn your car'; this is the second time he has committed arson. This person is our former brother-in-law; he was married to my sister. They divorced by court order. They divorced without any mutual conflict.

My sister took her children. She did not ask for any alimony. Both she and her children are under state protection. Since the divorce, the state does not allow him to see the children due to violence and insults.

After that, he turned on us, saying 'You did this.' I spoke with his family today and told his brother, 'He may have psychological problems, get him treated, he won't listen to us either.' He threw a flammable substance inside. He pulled the iron door shut so people couldn't get out, to let the flames grow even more. There are people who were severely affected; they are in the hospital right now," he said.
