Prison sentence for defendant who tried to take his father's life over inheritance

A verdict has been reached in the trial of Polat E., who planted an explosive device in his father's vehicle over an inheritance dispute in the Mazıdağı district of Mardin, and his three accomplices. Prison sentence for defendant who tried to take his father's life over inheritance

In the Mazıdağı district of Mardin, a person who wanted to kill his father with an explosive device over an inheritance 2 years ago, along with 3 defendants who helped him in exchange for money, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 7 years and 1 month to 17 years and 6 months.

Detained defendant Berkant K., the victim of the incident Mehmet E., and lawyers were present at the hearing at the Mardin 5th High Criminal Court.

Among the detained defendants, Polat E., the son of Mehmet E., and his friends Abas A. and Baran A. attended the hearing via the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS) from the prisons where they are being held.

In the opinion he prepared regarding the merits, the public prosecutor expressed his opinion that the defendants should be punished and that their detention should continue.

Making their defense at the hearing, the defendants reiterated their previous statements and requested their release.

During the hearing, the father, Mehmet E., argued that his son did not want to kill him and stated that he was not filing a complaint.

The defense attorneys for the defendants also stated that their clients did not accept the accusations leveled against them and requested their release.

The court panel sentenced the detained defendants Polat E. to 17 years and 6 months, Abas A. to 17 years and 4 months, and Baran A. to 13 years and 4 months in prison for the crimes of "attempted intentional homicide" and "unauthorized possession or transfer of dangerous substances," and ruled that their detention should continue.

The panel sentenced the detained defendant Berkant K. to 7 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of "aiding in intentional homicide" and decided to release him, taking into account the time he spent in detention.

On June 30, 2024, in the Mazıdağı district of Mardin, Polat E. had placed an explosive device in his father's vehicle with 3 friends in exchange for money; the father, Mehmet E., noticed the bag, threw the explosive into an abandoned building in front of his house, and the explosive detonated.
