'Release' in the Antalya cable car disaster trial

The trial of 12 defendants, 5 of whom were in custody, including Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz, continued regarding the cable car accident in the Konyaaltı district of Antalya on April 12, 2024, which resulted in 1 death and 7 injuries.

The fourth hearing of the case, held at the Antalya 6th High Criminal Court, was attended by detained defendants Ahmet Buğra S., Serkan Y., Serdar T., Suphi K., and Okan E., as well as non-detained defendants, complainants, and lawyers for the parties.

Given the floor during the hearing, complainant Dilek Güvener stated that she did not wish to press charges against the defendants. Explaining that they boarded the cable car on a holiday and experienced a major jolt in the cabins on the way back, Güvener stated that there was a sudden, violent shaking, that a collapse occurred as a result of the cables snapping, and that she could not look around much due to fear.

THEY DID NOT PRESS CHARGES

Fatma Tural also stated that she did not wish to press charges against the defendants. İrem Nazlı Özcan stated that she did not wish to press charges against the defendants, adding that she had boarded the cabin with her sibling and that there was a major swaying while going up. In his interim opinion, the prosecutor requested that detained defendant Suphi K. be released under judicial control and that the detention of the other defendants continue.

RELEASED UNDER JUDICIAL CONTROL

Presenting their defense against the prosecutor's opinion, the detained defendants stated that they did not accept the parts of the expert report that were against them and requested their release. Announcing its interim decision, the court panel ruled for the release of detained defendants Ahmet Buğra S., Serkan Y., Serdar T., Suphi K., and Okan E. under judicial control, with a travel ban imposed. The hearing was adjourned to May 9.
