Declaration of Journalistic Rights and Freedoms prepares for launch

The "Declaration of Journalistic Rights and Freedoms," prepared as a result of the "Media Conference 2024 – The Transformation of Journalism and Quests" and "Media Conference 2024/2 – The Transformations of Journalism and Quests" organized with the contributions of the Media Solidarity Group, has been completed.

The "Declaration of Journalistic Rights and Freedoms" will be introduced at an event to be held at the Journalists Association on Friday, December 6, at 18:00.

DEMANDS AND PROPOSED SOLUTIONS PRESENTED IN ARTICLES

Drawing attention to the challenges journalists face, from digitalization processes to working conditions, the declaration has gathered its proposed solutions under the headings of "Freedom of Expression and Media," "Digitalization and Intellectual Property Rights," and "Working Life." This 20-article document, which concretely sets forth the demands of journalists, will be presented to the attention of both members of the profession and the public.

Many press professional organizations and academics under the umbrella of the Media Solidarity Group played an active role in the preparation of the declaration. The process, which began with the "Media Conference 2024 – The Transformation of Journalism and Quests" held on April 26-27, 2024, was completed with the second conference held on September 19-20, 2024.

Supporting organizations included many professional bodies such as the Press Council, the Progressive Journalists Association, the Journalists Union of Turkey, the Journalists Association, and the Economic Journalists Association.

'CRITICAL JOURNALISM IS THE FOUNDATION OF A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY'

The introduction text of the declaration emphasized the vital role of journalism for society:

“As we go through a difficult period, we now have a guide that will determine our path in our struggle for rights and freedoms. Critical and independent journalism is an indispensable element of modern democracies. The rights we demand are to guarantee the citizens' right to access accurate information.”
