Journalist and TELE1 Editor-in-Chief Merdan Yanardağ has been acquitted.

The court concluded that the alleged crime did not occur and decided to acquit Yanardağ.

HE FACED UP TO 8 YEARS AND 2 MONTHS IN PRISON

In the hearing, the prosecutor, in their final opinion on the merits, stated that Yanardağ was the author of the articles titled "Fascism and Islamic Fascism," which were published in 7 parts in Birgün newspaper between April 10 and May 29, 2022, and requested that he be sentenced to between 1 year and 5 months and 8 years and 2 months in prison for the crime of "repeatedly insulting the president."

The court had previously accepted the request of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's lawyer to join the case. Erdoğan's lawyer had stated that they agreed with the prosecutor's opinion and requested that Yanardağ be punished.
