Journalists meet in Çanakkale: 'Journalism is the fundamental pillar of democracy'

The Journalists Association delegation met with colleagues, academics, and communication faculty students in Çanakkale. The event was held in cooperation with the Çanakkale Journalists Association, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Communication, and the Journalists Association.

Within the scope of the sixth "Regional Training and Journalism Meetings," in addition to training sessions on digital journalism and media ethics, a talk titled "Journalism and being a journalist in Turkey" was held. Knowledge and experience regarding the changing conditions of journalism were shared at the event.

At the beginning of the meeting, a moment of silence was observed for fallen journalists, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

JOURNALISM IS THE FUNDAMENTAL PILLAR OF DEMOCRACY

The event began with an opening speech by Journalists Association Vice President Ali Oruç. In his speech, where he drew attention to the importance of journalism and thanked the institutions that contributed to the event, Oruç stated the following:

"Journalism is about upholding one of the fundamental pillars of democracy by delivering accurate information to society. With this understanding, we organized this program to increase the knowledge of our colleagues and to provide guidance to young journalists. We extend our sincere thanks to Çanakkale Journalists Association President Hafize Akıncı, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Rector Prof. Dr. Cüneyt Erenoğlu, Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. Hülya Önal, and Çanakkale Mayor Muharrem Erkek and the municipal staff, who are always by our side with their support, for their contributions and cooperation."

'WE ARE FIGHTING FOR THE LOCAL PRESS' 

Speaking after Oruç, Çanakkale Journalists Association President Hafize Akıncı said, "Journalism has been rapidly digitizing in recent years. We are also fighting for the local press to survive. In this process, learning how we can steer new media is of great importance for all of us. I would like to thank the Journalists Association for bringing us together on this platform."

Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. Hülya Önal said the following in her speech addressed to young journalist candidates:

"Over the course of two days, very valuable training will be provided on how digital technology and artificial intelligence will affect the journalism profession. I find such events extremely valuable in terms of sharing experience. We thank the Journalists Association for these contributions. I would also like to say this to young journalist candidates: Journalism should be a compass in pursuit of truth and reality in this chaotic environment we are in. You should also act with the desire to be the sentinels of this truth."
