Major downsizing at media giant: Nearly 2,000 people could lose their jobs
The British public broadcaster BBC is considering parting ways with approximately 2,000 employees over the next two years as part of a 500 million pound savings target.
The UK's leading public broadcaster, the BBC, is preparing a major downsizing program. Senior officials at the institution state that 500 million pounds must be cut from the budget, and with the implementation of this plan, it is expected that approximately 1,800 to 2,000 BBC employees will be laid off.
The BBC currently employs approximately 21,500 full-time staff. It was stated that the austerity measures would include a focus on digital content, primarily through staff reductions in certain units.
Acting Director-General Rhodri Talfan Davies emphasized in a program he attended on BBC Radio 4 that the financial measures taken "require big and difficult decisions." Davies stated that all service areas within the institution are being re-evaluated and that the closure of some channels or broadcasting services is among the possibilities.
It has been learned that the BBC management has announced that comprehensive information regarding the affected departments and the details of the plan will be shared in the coming months. In line with the institution's strategy to invest in digital, the future of some traditional broadcast channels has also been opened to debate.
Unions and employee representatives at the BBC have warned that a downsizing of this scale would have negative effects on the quality of the institution's journalism. Risks are being highlighted, particularly regarding the quality and independence of public service broadcasting.
If the plan in question is implemented, the BBC will have carried out its most extensive downsizing in recent years.
