MTV discontinues broadcast of its iconic music channels

MTV ended the broadcast of its thematic music channels, which were symbols of an era, as of January 1, 2026. The decision was made as part of a strategic restructuring within Paramount Global. The growing interest in digital platforms and the significant decline in the number of cable television viewers accelerated the end of music-focused television.

Channels catering to different generations, such as MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV 00s, MTV Music 24, Club MTV, and MTV Live, have now been removed from satellite and cable listings in Europe, Asia, and Turkey.

Experts point out that this step does not mean the MTV brand is disappearing entirely. The main MTV channel is planned to be restructured and continue with non-music content. While reality shows, series, and various entertainment productions will take their place on television screens, the home of music will now largely be digital platforms and social media.

From the perspective of viewers in Turkey, the closure of television channels bearing the MTV logo that broadcast music videos 24/7 symbolizes the end of an era. From now on, this content will only be accessible through digital environments.

The first music video aired when the channel began broadcasting in 1981, The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," was also shown on screen at the moment the television channel closed. For over 40 years, MTV succeeded in being the global showcase for music and brought the popularity of music videos to the world. MTV officials emphasized that in the age of social media, watching music videos on television has lost its former appeal and that this closure was inevitable.

The MTV name will continue to exist away from television screens through music awards and various global organizations.
