New York Times' NATO gaffe on social media's agenda
The New York Times, one of the leading newspapers in the US, misnaming NATO has drawn reactions from both social media users and US President Donald Trump. While Trump expressed that journalistic standards have declined, the newspaper announced that it would correct the error.
The New York Times made a notable error in its print edition published on Friday. The name of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was mistakenly written as "North American Treaty Organization" in the report. This situation found a major echo on many platforms, primarily the social media platform X. While users responded to the mistake with surprise and criticism, many questioned whether the error was real.
Among those pointing arrows of criticism was US President Donald Trump. In a post on his personal social media account, Trump argued that the New York Times has lost credibility due to "fake news" targeting him, and reacted with the words, "The failing and totally discredited New York Times referred to our 'partner' NATO as the 'North American Treaty Organization'." Inviting the newspaper to make a correction, Trump stated, "The correct name is ‘North Atlantic Treaty Organization’ – a very interesting mistake! Hiring and training standards at the NYT have fallen very low. Bring back ‘ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT!’"
In response to this mistake, an official statement came from the New York Times management. In an announcement made on social media following the criticism, the newspaper's communications team stated that the error would be rectified with a detailed correction in Saturday's edition. The statement clearly emphasized that the alliance's real name is the ‘North Atlantic Treaty Organization’ and noted that the error occurred in a report regarding President Trump's threats to withdraw from NATO.
