Diplomacy and media meet youth in Istanbul: Global crises addressed at IDEA diplomacy simulation

The "International Diplomacy Effection Academy" (IDEA) Diplomacy Simulation, brought to life by the Marmara University Global Diplomacy Club, brought together university students interested in diplomacy in a professional negotiation environment.

Conducted according to full-scale official procedure and protocol standards, the event featured over 100 students selected from various universities, who formed delegations for 14 different countries that shape world politics, such as the USA, China, Russia, Turkey, Germany, France, and Brazil.

INTENSE NEGOTIATIONS IN 5 DIFFERENT COMMISSIONS

Going beyond an ordinary simulation, participants in the event did not just take on the role of diplomats; each country delegation sat at the table with specific job descriptions such as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Economy, Environment and Energy, and Justice. Students developed strategies against crisis scenarios while protecting the national interests and historical stances of the countries they represented.

Throughout the simulation, intensive sessions were held in 5 separate commissions: Defense and Security, Justice and International Law, Technology and Digital Security, Economy and Development, and Global Security.

The excitement in the sessions was heightened by students representing the USA, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France, who used their veto powers—inherent to their "great power" status—as a strategic move.

12PUNTO'S MARK ON THE SIMULATION: THE PRESS CORRIDOR

One of the most striking aspects of the event was that the media component, alongside the diplomatic processes, was structured to reflect reality. The management of one of the news agencies operating within the simulation was undertaken by the 12punto team.

Young journalists kept a pulse on the simulation with "Mini Press Conferences Open to the Press" and breaking news reports filed during moments of crisis. The 12punto team, which followed the delegates' closed-door meetings and the decisions taken moment by moment, had the opportunity to experience diplomatic reporting in the field.

GOAL: SOLUTION REPORT AND CULTURE OF CONSENSUS

The main objective of the event was to realistically simulate the reactions of international actors during a global crisis and to create a viable "Solution Report." At the summit, students had the opportunity to demonstrate their competencies in areas such as oratory, crisis management, reporting, and diplomatic ethics.

GDS Global Diplomacy Club officials stated that such organizations broaden young people's perspectives on world affairs and contribute to the training of Turkey's future diplomat candidates.
