Femicides cannot be stopped: At least 287 women murdered in 10 months

Women continue to be the target of violence this year as well. As we approach the end of 2023, at least 287 women have been murdered in 10 months.

Femicides cannot be stopped: At least 287 women murdered in 10 months

Since the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, women continue to be the target of violence. The government's policies and rhetoric targeting women and children also pave the way for an increase in violence throughout the year. 

According to the 'violence tally' prepared by JinNews for the November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 287 women were murdered and 183 women died under suspicious circumstances in the first ten months of the year.

While it is noted in the tally that the perpetrators are usually the closest relatives of the murdered women, the data is as follows:

“88 women were murdered by their husbands, 22 by their ex-husbands, 26 by men they were in the process of divorcing, 15 by their sons, 22 by acquaintances, 8 by men they had separated from, 6 by their brothers, 11 by relatives, 6 by partners, 2 by their fathers, and 6 by men they did not know.”

10-MONTH VIOLENCE DATA:

January

In the first month of 2023, 31 women were murdered and 9 women died under suspicious circumstances. In January, when women were also subjected to attempted murder, crimes against children continued. In January, when 4 children were murdered, 2 children died under suspicious circumstances.

Of the women, 12 were murdered by their husbands, 6 by relatives, 5 by friends, 4 by their sons, 3 by acquaintances, and 1 by a man she had separated from. 5 of the married women were in the process of divorce.

February

According to February data, 10 women were murdered and 10 women died under suspicious circumstances. 3 women were subjected to attempted murder.

Of the women, 3 were murdered by their ex-husbands, 2 by their husbands, 1 by their father, 1 by their brother, and 1 by a male friend. While the degree of closeness of the perpetrators of 2 women is unknown, one of the perpetrators murdered the woman while they were in the process of divorce, and another had a restraining order against him.

March

In March, 22 women were murdered and 16 women were found dead under suspicious circumstances. 3 women were targeted for murder.

According to our March data, of the 22 murdered women, 6 were murdered by their husbands, 3 by men they were in the process of divorcing, 2 by their ex-husbands, 2 by men they lived with, 1 by their brother, 1 by an old friend, 1 by an acquaintance, 1 by their son-in-law, 1 by a male friend, and 3 by their children. It could not be determined who murdered one woman.

April

In April, 23 women and 4 children were murdered. 17 women and 4 children died under suspicious circumstances.

6 women were murdered by their husbands, 5 by acquaintances, 3 by their ex-husbands, 3 by men they were in the process of divorcing, 1 by their cousin, 1 by the man her daughter had divorced, 1 by the man her sister had divorced, 3 by their children, and 1 by an unidentified person or persons.

May

In May, 39 women and 1 child were murdered, and 1 woman was subjected to attempted murder. While 23 women and 3 children died under suspicious circumstances, one baby died as a result of rape.

2 women were murdered by men they were in the process of divorcing, 4 by their ex-husbands, 12 by their husbands, 2 by men they had separated from, 4 by partners, 4 by their sons, 4 by relatives, 2 by their brothers, 3 by acquaintances, and 2 by men they did not know.

June

According to the data we obtained for June, 25 women were murdered, and 24 women and 5 children died under suspicious circumstances.

3 women were murdered by men they were in the process of divorcing, 2 by their ex-husbands, 3 by their children, 7 by their husbands, 1 by a relative, 1 by a friend, 2 by men they had separated from, 4 by acquaintances, and 1 by their son-in-law.

July

According to July data, 26 women and 2 children were murdered, 9 women and 4 children died under suspicious circumstances, and 3 women were targeted for murder.

9 of the women were murdered by their husbands. 4 of these women were in the process of divorce. Furthermore, 7 women were murdered by their boyfriends, 3 by their sons, 2 by their ex-husbands, 2 by men who were acquaintances/relatives, 1 by her fiancé, and 1 by a male colleague. The closeness of one woman to the perpetrator is unknown.

August

According to the data we obtained for this month, 28 women and 2 children were murdered, 21 women and two children died under suspicious circumstances, and 4 women were targeted for murder.

While 17 of the women were murdered by their husbands, 4 by their boyfriends, 2 by acquaintances, and 3 by men they were in the process of divorcing, 1 woman was murdered by a man she did not know. The closeness of one woman to the perpetrator is unknown.

September

According to September data, 32 women and 3 children were murdered, 22 women and one child died under suspicious circumstances, and 1 woman was targeted for murder.

Of the women, 12 were murdered by their husbands, 5 by their ex-husbands, 1 by a boyfriend she had separated from, 2 by acquaintances, 4 by men they were in the process of divorcing, 1 by her nephew, 1 by her son, 1 by her former son-in-law, 1 by the man her sister was in the process of divorcing, and 1 by a man she did not know. The closeness of one woman to the perpetrator is unknown.

October

When we come to October, within the scope of the data we obtained, 28 women were murdered, and 13 women and 3 children died under suspicious circumstances. 2 women were targeted for murder.

12 women were murdered by their husbands, 2 by men they did not know, 2 by their sons, 2 by their brothers, 2 by their neighbors, 2 by men they were in the process of divorcing, 1 by her ex-husband, 2 by men they lived with, 2 by friends they had separated from, and 1 by her father.
