Put withdrawing from NATO, not Sweden, on the agenda

The Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) has issued a statement regarding the protocol for Sweden's accession to NATO, which is set to be discussed today in the TBMM Foreign Affairs Committee.

Stating that the issue is a 'document of shame' for the TBMM, the TKP statement described NATO as a 'terrorist organization.'

The statement also pointed out that this process is being used by the AKP government as a 'political bargaining chip.'

"OUR COUNTRY AND THE WORLD MUST BE RID OF NATO IMMEDIATELY"

The statement, titled "The TBMM Foreign Affairs Committee should put Turkey's withdrawal from this blood-stained organization on its agenda, not NATO's expansion," noted the following:

"The legislative proposal regarding the protocol for Sweden's accession to NATO will be discussed tomorrow (Thursday, November 16) in the TBMM Foreign Affairs Committee. This issue is a document of shame for the TBMM.

Following the start of the Russia-Ukraine War, the initiative for NATO to gain new members in Northern Europe gained great momentum. The membership of two countries in the region that were not NATO members, Sweden and Finland, was rapidly brought to the agenda. The first result of the process, which was advanced with unprecedented speed, was the admission of Finland to NATO membership in March of this year. Unfortunately, the TBMM performed very poorly on this issue as well, and a positive opinion was expressed for this country's membership; not a single dissenting vote was cast. Following Finland, Sweden's membership will also cause the war environment and political tensions in the region to become permanent. This is because Western imperialist powers, led by the USA, are in favor of the continuation of tensions here.

Another dimension of the issue is that the NATO membership process of these two countries is being handled by the AKP government as a political bargaining chip. The issue was used as material for nationalist rhetoric in domestic politics and was placed on the table as a bargaining chip in negotiations with imperialist powers. Thus, our country continues to be a part of imperialist politics.

However, NATO is nothing more than a terrorist organization. From the very beginning, it has not brought peace to its own members or to the peoples of other countries. On the contrary, it has spread terror and organized massacres in the countries it has targeted. It has interfered in the internal affairs of other countries, both by directly declaring war and engaging in military initiatives, and by using tools such as assassinations and coups through counter-guerrilla tactics. It has not allowed the working class to raise its voice and has never hesitated to engage in the bloodiest of ventures.

The world must be rid of NATO immediately. The first step toward this is for our country and other members to withdraw from NATO. The TBMM Foreign Affairs Committee should put Turkey's withdrawal from this blood-stained organization on its agenda, not NATO's expansion. The Communist Party of Turkey has advocated this from the very beginning and will continue to do so. Because NATO only causes wars to break out, blood to be shed, and humanity to suffer.

Down with NATO, down with imperialism!"
