Statement from the Secularism Assembly on Batman:

We will continue the struggle

In a statement, the Secularism Assembly announced that they will continue their struggle against having primary school students clean mosques as part of the ÇEDES project.

Anti-secular practices in schools under the scope of ÇEDES continue. In November 2023, it was revealed that primary school students in Tekirdağ and Batman were cleaning mosques as part of the ÇEDES project.

The Secularism Assembly had launched a campaign regarding the practice that came to light. The Assembly had filed a criminal complaint with the Batman Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the matter. The prosecutor's office issued a decision of "No Grounds for Action." The Secularism Assembly announced in a statement that they have appealed the decision. The statement included the following remarks:

"As the Secularism Assembly, we have appealed the 'No Grounds for Action' decision issued by the Batman Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding our complaint dated 09/11/2023 concerning the cleaning of mosques by primary school students in Tekirdağ and Batman as part of the reactionary project called ÇEDES.

Our complaint is based on reports that also appeared in the national press. Images showing primary school children cleaning mosques and cemeteries were shared by the Directorate of Religious Affairs and provincial directorates of national education under the name of 'activities.' Therefore, the commission of a crime is established.

Issuing a 'No Grounds for Action' decision on the file without identifying the suspects or taking their statements means that reactionary educational practices are once again being protected by the judiciary. Reactionary practices spreading throughout the country are increasing day by day by taking refuge under judicial protection.

As the Secularism Assembly, we once again state that we will continue our struggle against all kinds of reactionary practices, especially the ÇEDES project, and that we will resort to the necessary legal channels.

We will not surrender our children to reactionary darkness."
