2028 statement from AKP's Kabaktepe: 'We will make Erdoğan president'

The 7th Ordinary Congress of the AKP's Istanbul Provincial Women's Branch was held with the participation of President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

During the opening ceremony of the congress held at the Haliç Congress Center, a notable statement came from AKP Istanbul Provincial Chair Osman Nuri Kabaktepe, who will hand over his duties to Abdullah Özdemir at the ordinary congress to be held on February 7.

Expressing their belief in the AKP, Kabaktepe said, "We will make Recep Tayyip Erdoğan president in 2028."

CAN ERDOĞAN RUN AGAIN?

Can President Erdoğan, who is in his 2nd term under the Presidential Government System and his 3rd term in total, run again in the first general election?

For Erdoğan to be able to run again, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) must decide on an 'early election' before the President's term expires.

The relevant article in the Constitution states, "If the Assembly decides to renew the elections during the second term, the President may be a candidate one more time." For this to happen, the votes of 360 deputies are required.

If the necessary majority cannot be achieved here, a possible constitutional amendment would be required.

However, it is not clear whether the relevant clause would be added in the event of an amendment.
