872 out of 923 parliamentary questions directed at Akın Gürlek remain unanswered

It has drawn attention that Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek has not responded to written parliamentary questions directed at him since he took office. According to information in the TBMM system, 923 parliamentary questions have been submitted to Gürlek. While the response period for 51 of these questions is still ongoing, records show that 872 questions have remained unanswered.

Gürlek was appointed as Minister of Justice by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on February 11. A different picture emerged regarding the questions directed at Mustafa Çiftçi, who was appointed to the Ministry of Interior on the same date. It was stated that Çiftçi answered 215 parliamentary questions, albeit after the deadline, and left 373 questions unanswered.Mustafa Çiftçi ve Akın Gürlek’in bir araya geldiği görüntü.

UNANSWERED TOPICS

Gürlek, who is criticized by the opposition particularly for his previous duties before becoming minister and his stance regarding certain investigations, also frequently makes headlines with his social media posts. However, the failure to respond to written questions submitted by members of parliament as part of parliamentary oversight has sparked debate regarding the functioning of the oversight mechanism in the TBMM.

Among the questions directed at Gürlek that remain unanswered are those concerning the release of Hiranur Foundation founder Yusuf Ziya Gümüşel, the Gülistan Doku investigation, alleged human rights violations in prisons, claims regarding judge and prosecutor interviews, and events that occurred during the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) case.

Topics awaiting responses also include data on companies that have requested concordat or gone bankrupt since 2023, investigations opened against comedians, and the educational backgrounds of those convicted of drug trafficking and intentional injury.
