92-year-old president throws the country into turmoil
The re-election of 92-year-old Paul Biya in Cameroon has sparked violent protests across the country. The European Union has condemned the excessive use of force by security forces and called on the parties to engage in dialogue.
In the elections held in Cameroon, 92-year-old Paul Biya receiving more than 53 percent of the votes to remain in power for another seven years has drawn reactions from opposition parties. This decision by the Constitutional Council indicates that Biya will serve as president until the age of 99.
Following the announcement of the election results, intense protests began in the oil and cocoa-producing country. Opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary had previously declared victory in the election and stated that he would not accept any other result. His supporters clashed with police in the streets of Douala and blocked roads with barricades. At least six people have lost their lives in these clashes.
Other opposition leaders alleged that there was widespread fraud in the elections. While Akere Muna described the election process as "the hallmark of a tyranny," female candidate Tomaino Ndam Njoya said, "The will of the people has been usurped."
The European Union stated that it is deeply concerned about the excessive use of force by security forces against protesters and called on the parties to engage in dialogue. While many people in Douala are hesitant to go out on the streets, some have characterized Biya's victory as a "stolen election."
