According to the AKP's calculations, what are the vote shares of the CHP and DEM Party in Istanbul?

There are 2 months left until the March 31, 2024 local elections. In Istanbul, one of the cities most anticipated in these critical elections, Ekrem İmamoğlu, Murat Kurum, Buğra Kavuncu, Birol Aydın, and Azmi Karamahmutoğlu will compete.

It is being awaited with curiosity whether the DEM Party will field a candidate.

Gazete Pencere columnist Nuray Babacan reported in her column today that AKP officials are calculating potential shifts in votes inch by inch.

"According to analyses conducted within the party, the CHP's traditional vote in the Istanbul local elections is around 32-35 percent. It is claimed that if they run alone, this rate will drop even further," Babacan said, continuing as follows:

"It is argued that the IYI Party's break from İmamoğlu will cost him 4 percent of the vote. It is stated that the DEM Party's vote share in Istanbul is around 11 percent.

DEM IS BEING 'MONITORED'

Every movement within the DEM Party is being closely monitored. According to the claims of AKP members, even if the party leadership says 'support İmamoğlu,' not all of the votes will go to him. The DEM Party fielding its own candidate, whoever it may be, is eagerly awaited and is being supported behind closed doors. Furthermore, it is argued that such an alliance would alienate nationalist votes, which are around 3-4 percent.

VIEW ON CHP COMPONENTS

Efforts are being made to spread claims that there are problems between the CHP and Kurds and Alevis, and that they are disgruntled. Compiling all of these, AKP officials argue that the Istanbul elections are against them this time.

FACTORS NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT

In all these analyses, issues such as the economic crisis, unbridled inflation, the failure and vote loss of the central government, the fact that Murat Kurum from Konya has not yet resonated with the voter profile, that some of Kurum's promises have already been brought to the agenda by İmamoğlu, the cancellation of the last elections, efforts to impose a political ban, and the impact of these are not included in the AKP's analyses."
