AKP files criminal complaint against Özgür Özel: 'Junta leader' remark taken to court

The AKP MYK met today. While the meeting was ongoing, AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik made statements. Çelik announced that he would take legal action regarding the term 'junta leader' used by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel for AKP President Erdoğan.

Stating that MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's sensitivity regarding a terror-free Turkey, even during his recovery process, is very valuable, Çelik said, "Mr. Bahçeli following the process so closely has been a new peak for the importance and sensitivity we attach to this issue. In his opening speech at today's MYK, our President also stated that state institutions are operating in a synchronized manner regarding a terror-free Turkey, and that this process should be carried out in the same way politically. As the AK Party Headquarters, this is a subject at the top of our political agenda. There will be new stages in the new process."

USED THE TERM SOCIAL DIVISIVENESS

Criticizing CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, AKP's Çelik said the following:

"CHP Chairman Mr. Özel has engaged in negative politics in a broad literature ranging from provocation to mandate-seeking. The campaign carried out regarding the non-recognition of the labor of tradesmen, farmers, and workers is a first where a party makes the labor of its own citizens an element of conflict. Looking at it both in terms of social life and other aspects, Mr. Özel is using a language of great political fanaticism. By dividing people into those who support them and those who do not, he has engaged in an activity we call social divisiveness. This has not found a response among our citizens. The CHP management has condemned itself to a politics that is increasingly becoming marginalized.

By making a major democratic and political mistake, by committing a great error, Mr. Özgür Özel tried to label our government and our President with expressions that would not even pass by our political life. While doing this, they are reflecting their own political lives and culture. The term junta emerged as a result of disrespect for the elected will. Since he has opened the subject of political junta-ism, then it is useful to look into this matter. Since we transitioned to multi-party life, the CHP has either been an element of provocation or a driver of political junta-ism, or it has remained silent or supported the juntas that emerged. If a study is conducted, if there is any political junta-ism here, it will equal the CHP. Without Özgür Özel reckoning with his own history, without facing what they have done to sabotage our democracy and to usurp the dynamics of our republic, he does not have the strength or capacity to speak on these matters without entering into a serious political reckoning. Whoever is elected by the citizens' vote, the CHP calls the elected ones dictators or autocrats and accuses them of junta-ism."
