AKP lawmaker criticizes daytime television programs

AKP Istanbul MP Serkan Bayram celebrated the May 10-16 Disability Week at a press conference held at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and spoke about the film "Buğday Tanesi" (Grain of Wheat), which is based on his own life. Bayram stated that the film has been released in various countries and has contributed to social awareness.

Speaking about society's search for hope, Serkan Bayram said, "We are moving our disabled brothers and sisters and our disadvantaged groups to the major leagues. People need hope. The earthquake, the pandemic, and economic problems have affected everyone. People see hope and light in us. This is valuable for all of us."

Following the press conference, in response to a question, Bayram evaluated daytime television programs, stating that these broadcasts harm family values.

"WE ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO LISTEN TO THESE"

Serkan Bayram stated that the content of daytime and morning programs poses a threat to the social structure and used the following expressions:

"RTÜK is looking into it. In fact, a few of our fellow MPs and I went to RTÜK. We said: Our society is uncomfortable with these morning and daytime programs. We are calling this the 'year of the family.' But unfortunately, these morning and daytime programs have gone off the rails and are destroying the concept of family. They do not show good attitudes or behaviors at all. They need to be removed as soon as possible. We are continuing this struggle. In the areas we visit, we generally see that they want to spread this widely because of advertising revenue. You look at the news, excuse me; there are expressions like 'I am with my daughter, I am also with my mother-in-law.' We are not obligated to listen to these. They come out and tell these stories without shame."

Bayram argued that these programs are generally expanded for ratings and advertising revenue, but their content negatively affects social order.

"ASK A HUNDRED PEOPLE, 90 WILL AGREE WITH US"

Addressing those who defend daytime programs by claiming they contribute to solving cases, Bayram pointed out that the relevant state institutions can perform their duties effectively and said the following:

"But some say that in these types of incidents, the police and the judiciary get involved. These programs are useful. I mean, does this country not have police and prosecutors? Are we going to pin our hopes on a television program? We are a state of law. This country has police, prosecutors, security forces, and a judiciary. Everyone will do their job. The press will do its job, the police will do their job, and the judiciary will do its job. We are deputies, we are servants; we will serve our people. Because I see the complaints coming from the field so often, I say this as the voice and conscience of the nation, with a perspective that transcends politics: These programs must be removed as soon as possible, without delay. Because they are programs that destroy the morality of society and set bad examples. They are contents that normalize certain things. We will be saved once these are removed as soon as possible. I think it is near. If necessary, I will submit a legislative proposal, but this is not a subject that directly requires a legislative proposal. Ask a hundred people, 90 will agree with us."
