AKP takes legal action for students over 30

New conditions introduced in Istanbul for students over the age of 30 to benefit from public transportation discounts have drawn a reaction from the AKP. AKP Group Spokesperson Murat Türkyılmaz stated that they would continue their legal struggle against this regulation.

Türkyılmaz recalled that as a result of the annulment lawsuit they filed, the court ruled that this regulation by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) was unlawful. He emphasized that with the cancellation of this decision, everyone with student status would be able to benefit from discounted transportation rights regardless of age.

İBB'S DECISION CRITICIZED

Türkyılmaz stated that the İBB administration disregarded the court ruling and brought the same practice back to the agenda in the September 2025 Assembly, where it was accepted with CHP votes. It was stated that in the new regulation, only master's and doctoral students would be able to benefit from the discount if they document that they are not working.

However, Türkyılmaz said that this regulation does not meet the points specified in the court ruling and that the İBB is ignoring the law and victimizing thousands of students. He expressed that the AKP would continue its political and legal struggle with determination and would take all necessary steps.
