Call from Ali Mahir Başarır regarding Can Atalay: 'Come, let's fix this disgrace'
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır, speaking at a press conference in Parliament, called for an extraordinary General Assembly session to be held on August 16, stating, "The Constitutional Court has ruled that Can Atalay is a member of parliament. Come, let's fix this disgrace on Friday."
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır spoke at a press conference held in Parliament.
Reminding that the law regarding stray animals was passed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), Başarır stated that during the deliberations on the law, AK Party Group Chairman Abdullah Güler had said, "There is absolutely no killing in this law, there is adoption."
'THIS LAW CANNOT BE IMPLEMENTED'
Asking the question, "Were the images from Edirne's Uzunköprü district, Niğde, Bartın, and Ankara's Altındağ district lies?", Başarır claimed that the government is creating a false perception on this issue.
Demanding that prosecutors open investigations into the footage from various provinces and stating that those who kill animals must be prosecuted, Başarır said, "This law cannot be implemented, it should not be implemented. Those responsible for this must be held accountable."
Stating that a woman was arrested due to her remarks in a street interview in İzmir, Başarır argued that there is no freedom of thought and expression in Turkey. Başarır said, "Even if we thought for a moment that there was a crime, there is no crime that requires arrest, and this is not among the catalog crimes. But why? Because a gentleman was uncomfortable, because she disturbed the gentleman, and because she made harsh criticisms, a woman was arrested."
CITIZEN ARRESTED FOR STREET INTERVIEW
Arguing that the government has pushed aside the rule of law and all elements of legal security, Başarır claimed that there is no personal security. Başarır noted the following:
"I want to ask the judges, prosecutors, and the palace's scribes; what did you do about that citizen who said, 'We will cut the heads of opposition leaders' in a street interview in Batman? You took his statement and released him. Why? Because they want to cut our heads off. This woman did not say anything like that. She spoke about the refugee problem, that digital bans are fascism, and that the one-man rule is causing discomfort in this country. There may be aspects of her criticisms you do not agree with, but if we arrest everyone for every harsh criticism, where will we end up?"
PARIS OLYMPICS
Congratulating the athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Başarır shared his view, "There is something that saddens us; we have not won a gold medal after many years. Today, we returned to the country with zero gold medals."
Stating that Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak blamed the federation presidents regarding the results at the Olympics, Başarır said that Minister Bak must be held accountable and do what is necessary.
UNEMPLOYMENT DATA
Stating that citizens' bank debts have reached 3.39 trillion liras, Başarır reported that individual loan and credit card debts increased by 54.6 billion liras between July 26 and August 2.
Başarır continued as follows:
"85 million people are getting more into debt day by day. The number of enforcement files due to the 85 million's debts to banks is increasing even more. But there is still a Minister of Finance who paints a rosy picture. I wonder, how will he explain this situation? The real unemployment rate has increased by 3.8 compared to last month, and this rate is currently 29.2. It was 29.4 when workplaces were closed during the pandemic period; currently, Turkey is experiencing the same unemployment rate in real unemployment as the pandemic period. But there is a government that is not ashamed or embarrassed by this."
Reminding that the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) placement results have been announced, Başarır stated that many citizens called him on the phone saying, "My child has no place to stay."
DORMITORY PROBLEM
Ali Mahir Başarır expressed that the government has not learned any lessons from what has happened and that CHP-run municipalities are working to solve the dormitory problem.
Demanding an increase in the scholarships given to university students, Başarır said, "The scholarship is 2 thousand liras, the loan given by the state is 2 thousand liras. This money must be at least the minimum wage, it must be at least the lowest pension. But today, our children cannot even eat 10 meals with 2 thousand liras."
CAN ATALAY
Making statements regarding the motion submitted by his party to call the Parliament to an extraordinary session on August 16 to open a general debate following the Constitutional Court's decision on Gezi Park trial convict Can Atalay, Başarır announced that the TBMM will meet extraordinarily on Friday, August 16, and that they have submitted a petition with the signatures of 120 deputies.
Stating that the will of the people of Hatay has been usurped, Başarır noted the following:
"We are giving a chance, we want it to be corrected. The Constitutional Court has ruled that Can Atalay is a member of parliament. Come, let's fix this disgrace on Friday. Let's deliver his rights. Let's put an end to the Constitutional Court and the Constitution being pushed aside. Just as in the cases of Enis Berberoğlu and Gergerlioğlu, come and read this decision, and as the TBMM, let's say, 'Can Atalay is a member of parliament, he is the deputy of Hatay, he is an elected deputy. The Court of Cassation has committed a major crime. It has attempted a coup against both the TBMM and the judiciary.' Let's solve this bad situation, this lawless situation, this situation contrary to the Constitution, all together."
Upon being asked whether a response had been received from the TBMM Presidency regarding meeting on Friday, Başarır stated that the provisions of the Rules of Procedure are clear and that he was told a decision would be made today.
Expressing that there is no discretionary power, Başarır said, "The Parliament meets, a general debate is opened, a vote is taken, and we decide whether to include it on the agenda. Therefore, according to the Rules of Procedure, this is a clear situation."
To the question, "Does the Constitutional Court's decision need to be read?", Başarır replied, "In my opinion, absolutely. The Constitutional Court says, 'I have made a decision, I stand behind my decision, Can Atalay is a member of parliament.' What is the problem with this? Didn't you strip Enis Berberoğlu of his parliamentary seat? Did you lose your standing when you corrected this mistake in the Gergerlioğlu case? We expect the same thing on Friday."
Regarding the question about what will happen in the General Assembly, Başarır said, "We will attend with 200 deputies. The groups will make the necessary speeches. We will speak on behalf of the CHP Group. All groups will make their speeches on the general issue for 20 minutes each, and on their own behalf. After that, the Parliament will take a stance on this issue. Or they will vote against it, so that it is not opened."
'THE GOVERNOR OF ÇORUM WILL CONFESS THIS DISGRACE'
Upon being reminded that it was announced that the foreign nationals who allegedly beat a school principal and a school employee with chains in Çorum have left the country, Başarır noted the following:
"You will come to my country as you please, then you will beat my teacher in Çorum. Then you will leave this country as you please. And the governor, the governor of Çorum, will confess this disgrace. Shame on you. A citizen of this country, a woman, will be detained and arrested within 6 hours because she bravely criticized the President. A completely AKP-style trial, border security, and justice. Decency, decency, truly decency. The Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior have banned the sharing of crimes committed by refugees in the country with the media."
