Another municipality passes to the AKP

Another municipality passes to the AKP

The change in administration at the Derecik Municipality has drawn attention. Following the prison sentence handed down to Mayor Hasan Dinç and his subsequent deprivation of public rights, Mesut Tekin from the New Welfare Party had been elected as acting mayor in recent weeks. With the expiration of Tekin's 45-day term, new elections for acting mayor were held in the council.

In this critical vote, the resignation of two YRP municipal council members from their party and their subsequent joining of the AKP shifted the balance. In the new election, AKP member Rahmi Can became the acting mayor by receiving 6 votes in the 11-member municipal council.

The Hakkari Provincial Presidency of the New Welfare Party announced that a disciplinary process has been initiated regarding the council members who resigned from the party. The statement issued by the party included the following remarks:

“In line with our party's understanding of discipline, the ethics of our cause, and organizational rules; a referral process to the disciplinary board with a request for permanent expulsion has been initiated for Derecik District Municipal Council members İskender Erik, Fesih Sıddık Ekinci, and party member Reşit Ekinci, to be evaluated within the scope of the disciplinary provisions of the party's internal bylaws. The New Welfare Party continues its path with a political understanding based on principles and organizational discipline, rather than being person-centered. Respectfully announced to the public.”

This change of duty in the Derecik Municipality has once again demonstrated how quickly political balances can shift in local government.
