Appointments in the police force reveal a power struggle! MHP's influence and the Mersin operation

New appointments in the police force have brought the tension between bureaucracy and politics back to the agenda. T24 columnist Tolga Şardan states that there are two main factors behind these appointments: the breaking of the MHP's influence over the organization and the coordination problems created in Ankara by the investigations into CHP-run municipalities in Mersin.

One of the factors that accelerated the decree was the view of MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli that "Both Mahmuts should remain in office." These statements reveal the reasons behind the pressure for the removal of Director General of Security Mahmut Demirtaş. The other Mahmut pointed to by Bahçeli, Deputy Director General of Security Mahmut Çorumlu, has remained in his post for now.

The reactions displayed by Çorumlu's chief of staff, Mert A., to allegations that he would be dismissed were another important factor affecting the inner workings of the process. Çorumlu felt uncomfortable after this incident, and this situation damaged his image.

NO ROOM FOR MHP!

It is noteworthy that no names supported by the MHP or linked to the party were included in the decree. In particular, the fact that İzzet Ulvi Yönter, a prominent figure in the MHP's purge process, was not included in the decree is evaluated as a sign of the party's diminishing influence within the bureaucracy.

Tolga Şardan states that another critical factor influencing the decree was the operations against CHP-run municipalities in Mersin. İdris Yılmaz, who served as the Hakkari Police Chief, was reassigned to the headquarters after 8 months. It is claimed that the judicial investigation into CHP-run municipalities in Mersin played a major role in Yılmaz's dismissal. In the operations in question, the lack of coordination between the courthouse and the police caused this process to accelerate.

The other factor behind Yılmaz's dismissal stems from the difficulties experienced in processing two investigation files in the city. This situation followed a different process than the operations against other CHP-run municipalities.

INTERIOR MINISTER ÇİFTÇİ'S CHOICE: MEHMET ÖZDEMİR

Following the changes in duty in Mersin, the appointment of Police Chief Mehmet Özdemir, who was assigned to Siirt, is also recorded as a remarkable development. With the preference of Interior Minister Süleyman Çiftçi, Özdemir, who was serving as the Erzurum Police School Director, was appointed to Siirt.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS AFTER THE DECREE?

Although the appointment decisions were followed with great anticipation, a development that could be described as "the mountain labored and brought forth a mouse" occurred as a result. The process of staffing by various groups continues in both the civil administration and the police force.
