Backlash against Gürsel Tekin for opposing the convention: 'Have you started to dislike this decision you once liked?'

The debates over an extraordinary convention within the Republican People's Party (CHP) have been brought back to the agenda by a statement from one of the party's prominent figures, Gürsel Tekin. Tekin, who recently returned to his post following a court ruling, opposed the call for an extraordinary convention issued by 221 former deputies and senators, fueling the controversy by stating, "A convention cannot be held immediately."

In his assessment, Tekin stated that all delegates in Istanbul were placed under an injunction by a court ruling, and further noted that 44 delegates were under arrest, 21 had switched to the AK Party, 5 had resigned, 14 had been expelled, and 163 delegates were involved in investigation files. Tekin explained his opposition to an extraordinary convention by saying, "With such a grave situation at hand, the legitimacy and representative power of the delegation have become a matter of serious debate. I ask: Under these conditions, how healthy, how inclusive, and how indisputable could a convention be?"

SHARP RESPONSE FROM EFKAN BOLAÇ TO THE STATEMENTS

Tekin's remarks received a swift reaction from lawyer Efkan Bolaç. In a social media post, Bolaç recalled the section of the court ruling regarding "party organs continuing their duties as they were," and expressed his criticism by saying, "Since convention delegates are also party organs, shouldn't you have no objection? Well, have you started to dislike this decision you once liked, or what?"

Bolaç further brought Tekin's criticisms to the fore by stating, "What did that AKP judiciary you like so much say?: '...that the chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and party organs prior to the convention date continue their duties as they were...' Since convention delegates are also party organs, shouldn't you have no objection? Well, have you started to dislike this decision you once liked, or what?"

CONVENTION PREPARATIONS IN THE SHADOW OF UNCERTAINTY

On the other hand, the debates over an extraordinary convention in the CHP remain uncertain. Despite the joint declaration by 221 former deputies and senators stating that a convention should be held as soon as possible for the future of the party, the legitimacy and representation disputes between the party management and certain figures are escalating tension within the party.
