Bahçeli's candidacy call stirs up politics: CHP reacts to new constitution

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's statement during his party's group meeting that Erdoğan should be a candidate again in 2028 has brought the issue of constitutional amendment back to the political agenda.

'THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT RELEASING ÖCALAN'

CHP officials, regarding MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's call for a constitutional amendment to allow President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to run again, as well as the appointment of a trustee to the Esenyurt Municipality, said, "They are at such an extreme point that they are now talking about releasing Abdullah Öcalan for Erdoğan. They are pressuring the DEM Party with trustees for this constitutional trap. They are trying to pull us into this agenda with Esenyurt as well. But we will neither draft a constitution for Erdoğan nor get caught up in this agenda."

Emphasizing that the CHP must speak as a whole about the public's problems in the face of this agenda from the ruling party, figures from the party leadership stated, "The polls we conduct also show that the public no longer even wants to listen to those who do not talk about their problems. This is also the reason behind our chairman's words to the party: 'Let's stand firm, let's not fall for the game.' He spoke about this with our deputies and mayors as well. In the coming days, the CHP will continue the Esenyurt Vigil; it will explain the public's hardships as a whole, especially in Parliament and during budget negotiations."
