New constitution call from BBP Chairman Mustafa Destici: 'Must stay away from ideological interests'

BBP Chairman Mustafa Destici said at a press conference held at the party headquarters that he paid a congratulatory visit to Kadir Özkaya, who was elected as the President of the Constitutional Court.

Explaining that the burden on Turkey's highest judicial body, the Constitutional Court, has increased with the introduction of the right to individual application following the 2011 referendum, and that thousands of applications are being evaluated by the Court, Destici stated that he discussed the HDP closure case and the cutting of Treasury aid, as well as the Can Atalay case, with President Özkaya.

Mustafa Destici emphasized that everyone should show sensitivity toward complying with the decisions made by the judicial institution.

'NOT THEIR IDEOLOGICAL INTERESTS...'

Touching upon the new constitutional amendment, Destici recalled that they have frequently stated that Turkey must be rid of the anti-democratic constitution imposed by coup plotters and junta members as soon as possible. Expressing that there is always a need for new changes in the constitution, Destici noted the following:

"There was another constitutional amendment in 2017; 7 years have passed, and now the constitution is being discussed again. I wish a comprehensive constitutional change could have been made back then. Today, we have time; there appears to be a 3-4 year period without elections.

I hope our parties will adopt a conciliatory attitude toward drafting a constitution by prioritizing the interests of the country, the nation, and the law, as well as democratization and the rule of law, rather than their own party interests or ideological agendas, and hopefully, Turkey will be rid of this coup constitution."

Responding to journalists' questions, Destici stated regarding the discussion of the HDP closure case during his visit to the Constitutional Court that President Özkaya is conducting a process based on the powers granted by the constitution.

Stating that the HDP should have been closed long ago, Destici expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that a precautionary measure on the party's Treasury aid was imposed and subsequently lifted.

Destici added that the main reason for the delay in the closure case is the request for a political ban on 500 individuals, and that the testimonies of these persons are being awaited.
