Breaking News... All eyes were on the YSK's convention decision: The decision has been announced! The application to cancel the convention was rejected

The request to cancel the 22nd Extraordinary Convention that the CHP planned to hold on September 21 had previously been rejected after applications were made to district and provincial election boards.

A CHP delegate had applied to the Çankaya District Election Board for the convention to be cancelled, but the application was rejected. Subsequently, the delegate applied to the Ankara Provincial Election Board to appeal this decision. However, the Ankara Provincial Election Board also ruled that "there was no need to issue a decision" on the grounds that "the district election board's decision is final."

Finally, the delegate took the application to the Supreme Election Council (YSK) during this process, alleging "complete illegality." The Supreme Election Council decided to review the application today at 15:30.

DECISION REACHED

Making a statement to the cameras after the meeting, Ahmet Yener announced that the application for the cancellation of the CHP Extraordinary Convention had been rejected.

CHP'S CONVENTION PLAN

There is less than two days left until the CHP's 22nd Extraordinary Convention. It has been reported that CHP Chairman Özgür Özel will appear before the delegates as the sole candidate at the convention. Özgür Özel does not plan to make changes to the Party Assembly (PM) and Central Executive Board (MYK) staff. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the election at the convention will be held using the block list method.

On the other hand, the intra-party opposition, consisting of names close to former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has decided not to attend the convention. However, this group is not considering forming an alternative list against Özgür Özel.

THE LEGAL PROCESS REGARDING CHP'S PAST

The "irregularity" investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the CHP's 38th Ordinary Convention, held on November 4-5, 2023, also draws attention. Former Hatay Mayor Lütfü Savaş and some delegates had separately applied to courts for the cancellation of this convention.

The filed cancellation lawsuits were consolidated into the case file at the Ankara 42nd Civil Court of First Instance on February 14. The hearing was postponed to September 8 during the session held on June 30, in order to await the result of the appeal made against the decision of lack of jurisdiction in the case subject to criminal proceedings. CHP lawyers requested the postponement of the September 8 hearing, stating that September 4-9 is the CHP's founding week and that, according to Article 86 of the party charter, founding events must be held on these dates. The court accepted this request and postponed the hearing to September 15.
