Breaking News... DEM Party was set to hold 'Freedom for Öcalan' rally: Governor's Office issues decision!

A new development has occurred regarding the "Freedom for Öcalan" rally planned to be held in Diyarbakır. The rally, which the DEM Party announced in recent weeks, was initially planned for January 4; however, it was stated that it had been postponed due to poor weather conditions and that the new date was January 25.

According to the statement from the Governor's Office, it was emphasized that maintaining public order and security before and after the rally in question is a priority, and restrictions have been placed on demonstrations and events throughout the province for four days.

The statement included the following remarks:

“Regarding the rally intended to be held at Station Square in the Yenişehir district of our province on Sunday, January 25, 2026, between 11:00 and 18:00, as a result of a detailed assessment taking into account recent events both within our country and outside our borders, as well as their potential effects on our province; it has been evaluated that actions capable of disrupting public order and security could intensify before, during, and after the date of the rally, using the rally event as a pretext.

In order to ensure peace and security, the inviolability of the person, safety regarding property, and public welfare within the provincial borders, to protect the rights and freedoms of individuals, to prevent the occurrence of violent incidents, and to eliminate the aforementioned threats and risks, our Governor's Office has deemed it appropriate to take the following measures within the administrative borders of Diyarbakır province.

For a period of 4 days, starting from 00:01 on Friday, January 23, 2026, until 23:59 on Monday, January 26, 2026; except for events deemed appropriate by the Governor's Office and District Governorships, all kinds of actions intended to be held in open areas (gathering, marching, press statements, hunger strikes, sit-ins, rallies, setting up stands, erecting tents, distributing leaflets/brochures, hanging posters/banners, etc.), the departure of individuals and vehicles from other districts assessed to be participating in the rally intended to be held on January 25, 2026, and/or their entry into the city center, and the entry/passage/exit of individuals and vehicles assessed to be coming from other provinces to participate in the aforementioned rally into our provincial borders, have been prohibited in accordance with Articles 17 and 19 of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911 and Articles 11/A, B, and C of the Provincial Administration Law No. 5442.”
