BREAKING NEWS... First comment from Devlet Bahçeli on İmamoğlu following detention: 'No one is beyond accountability'

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli has issued a statement regarding the operation in which Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained.

Bahçeli stated that the judicial action taken should be met with patience and common sense, and that any decision made by the judiciary must be respected.

Bahçeli said, “It should be a shared responsibility to meet the judicial action taken against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor with patience and common sense, and to approach any decision the law may reach with respect.”

“RESPECT FOR THE LAW IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY”

“Opposing justice and the law, or even opening them up for debate, is an invitation to an environment of disorder and violence,” Bahçeli assessed, emphasizing that the investigation into İmamoğlu should be met with common sense and that respect for the law is a shared responsibility.

Bahçeli used the expression, “To smear a legal measure by calling it a coup, and to prepare to take the search for rights to the streets, is a political degeneration that has lost its mind and its level of reason and morality.”

The remainder of MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's statement is as follows:

Stating, “No one is untouchable, unreachable, inaccessible, or beyond accountability,” Bahçeli continued as follows:

“Attempting to polarize, or even pit against each other, law and democracy, justice and the ballot box, the national will and the foundation of the state, and even resorting to fifth-column activities to do so, is a call for widespread acts of violence, a picture of intense instability, and destructive crises.

My trust in the Turkish judiciary is absolute. Innocence is the principle until guilt is proven by the court.

In these days when Turkey is stepping forward, step by step, into a century free of violence, complaints, terror, and doubt, and full of prosperity and peace, it is of historical importance that we show maximum attention to, and remain constantly vigilant against, internal and external centers attempting to stir up our interior and disrupt our order and unity.

Violence is the disregard for human dignity and the trampling of human values. Terror is also a systematic form of violence. A Turkey without terror is also a Turkey without violence.

Preventing violence, both at the individual and societal levels, is a hot topic that we have long shown sensitivity and awareness toward.

Within the scope of the instructions I gave to our Deputy Chairman responsible for Research-Strategy Development of the Nationalist Movement Party, a rare study has, thank God, emerged in the nature of a comprehensive work.

I thank our esteemed professors, valuable experts, and intellectuals who made unique contributions and efforts in the creation of our “Combating Individual and Societal Violence” study, who devoted their time and brought vitality to our established commission, and I also thank our Deputy Chairman responsible for Research-Strategy Development who coordinated the realization of such an important study, and I wholeheartedly congratulate them all.''
