Breaking News... First response from DEM Party to Bahçeli's Demirtaş remarks
The DEM Party has responded to MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's statement regarding the release of Selahattin Demirtaş, in which he said it "will be auspicious for Turkey." Speaking on behalf of the party, Law and Human Rights Commission Co-Spokesperson Sevda Çelik Özbingöl described the assessment as "late but important."
Following the finalization of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling regarding Selahattin Demirtaş, the statement made by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli has sparked a new debate on the political agenda. Bahçeli had stated, "The result has been reached through legal channels. His release will be auspicious for Turkey."
FIRST STATEMENT FROM DEM PARTY
Following Bahçeli's remarks, the first assessment came from the DEM Party front. Sevda Çelik Özbingöl, Co-Spokesperson of the Party's Law and Human Rights Commission and lawyer for former HDP Co-Chair Figen Yüksekdağ, characterized the statement as "late but important."
"LATE BUT IMPORTANT REMARKS"
Speaking on Ilke TV, Özbingöl made the following remarks regarding the Kobani trial process:
"You have followed the Kobani trial closely from the very beginning. The process was one where the political dimension came to the fore more than the legal dimension, and it was a process marked by very serious human rights violations alongside criticisms that the judiciary had become politicized. As of today, we have reached this stage with detention grievances that have lasted for nine years."
Özbingöl continued her remarks as follows:
"In connection with the political process our country is currently in, we find the rhetoric regarding the release of our politicians who are being held unjustly, based on democratic expectations, to be late but important. After the right to life, the most fundamental right is liberty. In this respect, every democratic step to be taken is valuable."
9TH YEAR OF DETENTION HIGHLIGHTED
In her statement, Özbingöl also drew attention to the long detention periods of the defendants in the Kobani trial. "As of today, we are facing a grievance of detention that has reached its 9th year. This situation must be evaluated from both a legal and humanitarian perspective," she said.
