BTP Spokesperson Önder reacts to 'Asset Peace': "It is a declaration to the whole world that the government has gone bankrupt"

Independent Turkey Party (BTP) Spokesperson Lütfullah Önder described the government's planned 'asset peace' initiative as a "declaration of economic bankruptcy." Arguing that clean investment does not enter the country due to legal insecurity, Önder stated that this move, which opens the door to capital of unknown origin, signals preparations for a new election economy.

BTP Spokesperson Önder reacts to 'Asset Peace':

Independent Turkey Party (BTP) Spokesperson Lütfullah Önder issued harsh criticisms regarding the 'asset peace' practice currently on the government's agenda. Speaking at a press conference held at the party headquarters, Önder argued that the practice is an indicator that the Turkish economy has reached a dead end, stating, "The government has opened its doors to money of unknown origin because it has lost hope that clean money will come to this country."

The highlights from Önder's statements are as follows:

Stating that the government has completely lost control of the economy, the BTP spokesperson expressed that the policies implemented have further impoverished the public. Comparing Turkey's inflation rates with global data, Önder said, "In 188 of the 193 countries in the world, and in 55 of the 56 countries in Africa, inflation is lower than in Turkey. You have failed in the fight against inflation."

Reminding of past privatizations and stating that the state has no factories, mines, or ports left, and that the state's sole source of income has become taxes and fines, Önder also touched upon Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek's search for foreign resources.

Emphasizing that foreign investors do not come to the country due to legal and political unpredictability in Turkey, Önder remarked, "Who would trust and invest their money in a country where elected party leaders and mayors are removed from office and diplomas are cancelled? Who can guarantee that such money will not be confiscated or evaporate in such a country?"

"DOOR OPENED TO MONEY OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN"

Claiming that the government has resorted to an asset peace because it has lost hope of finding "clean money" from abroad, Önder drew attention to the risks of the practice with the following words:

"The government is saying, 'Earn it however and wherever you want, just bring the money. We will not ask questions, we will not tax it, we will not look at whether it was obtained from crime.' This is truly a declaration to the whole world that the government has sunk and gone bankrupt economically. Just as Turkey has newly exited the grey list, it is taking the same step again out of desperation."

"An Indicator of New Election Preparations" Reminding that the AK Party has implemented asset peace regulations 15 times during its 25-year rule, Önder also drew attention to the timing of these practices. Stating that similar steps were taken before the elections in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2018, and 2023, the BTP Spokesperson said, "This situation is an indicator that while efforts to design the opposition continue on one hand, the government is preparing for a new election with the temporary relief it has created on the other."
