Burcu Köksal crisis grows: 'If she joins the AKP, she won't be able to look people in the face'
The first official statement from the CHP has arrived regarding Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Köksal, who has been in the spotlight over allegations that she will join the AKP. CHP Deputy Chairman Gökan Zeybek stated that Köksal has not answered phone calls for 48 hours, adding, "If she does such a thing, she will become unable to look people in the face." The statement also brought up the example of Özlem Çerçioğlu.
The allegations regarding Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Köksal switching to the AKP, which have become one of the most discussed topics in political circles in recent days, continue to grow.
Following the claims brought to the agenda by circles close to the government and figures close to former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the first statement has come from the CHP leadership.
CLAIM THAT SHE HAS NOT ANSWERED PHONES FOR 48 HOURS
CHP Deputy Chairman in charge of Local Governments, Gökan Zeybek, said in a statement to Halk TV that Burcu Köksal has not responded to calls from party members for the last 48 hours.
While stating that they do not have clear information on whether Köksal will join the AKP, Zeybek expressed that if such a step were taken, it would create a serious reaction in the public.
"SHE WILL BECOME UNABLE TO LOOK PEOPLE IN THE FACE"
In his statement, Gökan Zeybek said that if a mayor elected with the votes of the CHP base were to join the AKP, there would be political consequences.
Zeybek used the following expressions regarding the issue:
"When someone elected mayor with the clean votes of CHP members joins the AKP, they end up in the same situation as Aydın Metropolitan Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu. She would be unable to go out on the street, unable to look people in the face. She would become unable to walk the streets."
REMINDED OF THE ÖZLEM ÇERÇİOĞLU EXAMPLE
Bringing the example of Özlem Çerçioğlu to the agenda in his statement, Zeybek recalled the process of Çerçioğlu leaving the CHP and joining the AKP.
Zeybek also emphasized that Burcu Köksal had made harsh criticisms of the AKP in the past, saying, "The speeches made in Parliament by someone who was a CHP Group Deputy Chairman until just two years ago are clear. What she said about the AKP and her criticisms should be remembered."
A SIMILAR PROCESS WAS EXPERIENCED IN THE PAST
Last August, allegations were also made that Aydın Metropolitan Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu would join the AKP.
Çerçioğlu, who remained silent throughout the process and was reported not to have answered phone calls, later announced her resignation from the CHP with a statement on her social media account.
The AKP badge was pinned on Çerçioğlu by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the party's 24th-anniversary ceremonies.
