Canan Kaftancıoğlu listed as 'natural delegate'; party members apply to YSK for cancellation

Ahead of the congress that will determine the Istanbul provincial chair, a party member has filed an application with the Supreme Election Council (YSK) requesting a correction after Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu, whose political ban was upheld, was listed as a natural delegate.

Three of the conviction rulings handed down to Kaftancıoğlu for five separate charges were upheld by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation on May 12, 2022. Thus, the CHP Istanbul provincial chair's four-year, 11-month, and 20-day prison sentence was finalized, and a political ban was imposed. The Court of Cassation also ruled that Kaftancıoğlu's membership be deleted from the party registry.

REMINDED OF THE COURT OF CASSATION RULING

According to a report by Altan Sancar from Diken, upon learning that Kaftancıoğlu, whose CHP membership was deleted, was included on the list as a natural delegate, CHP member Fatmanur Gür filed an application with the YSK's Istanbul Provincial Election Board on October 5, 2023. Reminding that the CHP's Fatih district congress had been cancelled, Gür stated that the elected delegates could not cast votes. Noting that she herself was one of those delegates, Gür stated that Kaftancıoğlu's CHP membership was terminated by the Court of Cassation's ruling, that she is not a party member, and that Kaftancıoğlu's status as a delegate constitutes a case of 'full illegality'.

Gür also requested that a decision be made to prevent Kaftancıoğlu from casting a vote.
