CHP and MHP to meet in Parliament

A significant development has occurred while budget negotiations are ongoing in the Turkish Parliament.

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır will visit MHP Group Deputy Chairman Erkan Akçay in his office today at 13:30.

AGENDA: TRUSTEES

According to a report by Sözcü, it was stated that the main agenda item for the meeting will be the recently appointed trustees.

WHAT HAPPENED?

During the ongoing debates that began with the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the subsequent appointment of a trustee in his place, MHP Deputy Chairman and Istanbul MP Feti Yıldız addressed the discussions regarding the appointment of trustees to municipalities during the TBMM Planning and Budget Commission meeting where the Ministry of Justice budget was being discussed. He stated, "In order to prevent the appointment of trustees through arrests or recent practices, we must reconsider the Election Law and the Law on Political Parties, and discuss this matter calmly, without forgetting the presumption of innocence. Therefore, these laws are necessary."

Feti Yıldız later stated on his X account, "To ensure that discussions regarding trustee appointments and the prosecution of Members of Parliament do not continue, it is essential to redefine the criteria for becoming a mayoral or parliamentary candidate. Whether a public lawsuit filed with strong suspicion of a crime and concrete evidence in terror-related offenses should be an obstacle to candidacy can be discussed calmly... (without forgetting the presumption of innocence). In any case; the time has come to create a new Election Law and a Law on Political Parties."

POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM ÖZEL

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also responded positively to the statements made by MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız, stating, "I would like to express once again that I value that approach by the MHP and that we will follow it closely, and that we will establish contact with them within this week. We are telling the MHP that if this assessment is sincere this time, and if you can find support from the ruling party for this approach—which you are requesting for once—in return for the unconditional support you have given to everything your alliance partner has done so far, which is remarkable for parliamentary history, you would save Turkey from a great shame and our democracy from a great predicament."
