CHP calls on Numan Kurtulmuş: Warning that 'the process will be dynamited'
Speaking at the eighth meeting of the Parliamentary Commission established for the new resolution process, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir drew attention to the police intervention in Istanbul and the use of pepper spray against members of parliament, calling on Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş to break his silence and take a stand.
The eighth meeting of the National Unity, Solidarity and Democracy Commission, established within the scope of the Imralı Process, was held in Parliament. Before delivering his opening speech, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş gave the floor to CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir.
POLICE INTERVENTION BECOMES A SUBJECT OF DEBATE
The police intervention that occurred during the entry of Gürsel Tekin, who was appointed as a trustee to the CHP İstanbul Provincial Presidency, into the provincial building was brought to the commission's agenda. While clearing the way for Tekin, the police intervened against elected members of parliament with pepper spray and did not even allow the passage of vehicles allocated to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
The lack of any statement from Parliament Speaker Kurtulmuş following these events had drawn the reaction of the opposition.
In his speech at the commission meeting, CHP's Murat Emir called on Kurtulmuş, stating that this silence could not be maintained. Emir said, "This issue must be discussed in the commission. Otherwise, the office of the deputy loses its meaning."
PROPOSAL TO 'ISSUE A DECLARATION'
Emir requested that a joint declaration be issued with the participation of all political parties. In his speech, he said, "I demand from this commission that this aggression, especially what was done to the deputies in Istanbul, be identified, criticized, and that those responsible be warned."
WARNING THAT 'THE PROCESS WILL BE DYNAMITED'
Stating that remaining silent about the police intervention would have serious consequences for the Imralı Process, Emir used the following expressions:
“If this attack is condoned, if it is ignored, if it is covered up, won't we actually be dynamiting this commission in a sense, as this is an attack on democracy?”
