CHP Deputy Chair Gökçen reacts to Istanbul Governor Gül: 'It is a confession of an unlawful order'

Gökçen held a press conference at the party headquarters regarding the social events and cases they are following.

Reminding that Taksim Square, which they see as the symbol of May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day, was not opened on May 1, Gökçen pointed out that according to the Constitution, everyone has the right to organize unarmed and peaceful meetings and demonstration marches without prior permission.

Reacting to the Istanbul Governorship and the Ministry of Interior for closing Taksim Square on May 1, Gökçen said, "For the CHP and millions of workers, the square of May 1 is Taksim Square. We will continue our struggle for labor and to celebrate May 1st in peace in Taksim with all our determination," she said.

"ARTICLE 153 OF THE CONSTITUTION IS CLEAR"

Stating that she attended the hearing of the case regarding the train accident in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, where 25 people lost their lives, with Chairman Özgür Özel, Gökçen reminded that Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Can Atalay, who were among the lawyers for the train case, are still in prison.

Expressing that Can Atalay is being held in prison despite the Constitutional Court's ruling, Gökçen assessed, "Article 153 of the Constitution is clear. Constitutional Court rulings bind the legislative, executive, and judicial organs, administrative authorities, and real and legal persons. The crisis created means the suspension of a part of the Constitution."

Gökçen also evaluated the work they have carried out as a party regarding the cases opened for the Isias Hotel in Adıyaman, the terrorist attack in front of the Ankara Train Station, and the death of the then-Diyarbakır Bar Association President Tahir Elçi in the Sur district of Diyarbakır 9 years ago.

Stating that retired generals held responsible for the February 28 process are being kept in prison despite poor health conditions in the case they are being tried in, Gökçen noted the following:

"We will continue our struggle to ensure that whatever the law requires is done, that many events closely followed by society are clarified in every aspect, and that justice is provided for everyone, whoever they may be. We know that a new political climate has been born after March 31. This political climate is not only the success of our party, but in fact, it has come about more through our citizens' quest for rights and their demand to come together for what is right and to reveal the truth. As the quest for justice rises, and as we multiply wherever there is someone suffering oppression, we can all together bring Turkey to a much brighter future."
