CHP's Namık Tan: The AKP and MHP coalition is betraying the republic

CHP's Namık Tan: The AKP and MHP coalition is betraying the republic

Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Namık Tan reacted to the AKP and MHP for failing to implement the decisions of the Constitutional Court (AYM) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

In a message he published on his social media account under the title "A Monday Note," Tan quoted the famous political scientist Prof. Dr. Raymond Aron: "Is it possible to affirm both submission and the refusal to submit at the same time? What are the limits of authority and competence? This is the eternal problem of political order."

Stating that Aron's assessment remains valid today, Tan used the following expressions in his message: "Indeed, the AKP-MHP coalition is betraying the republic by not implementing the decisions of the AYM and ECHR and by suspending the constitution."

"WE WILL NEVER TAKE A STEP BACK IN DEFENDING RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS"

Tan continued as follows:

Interestingly, regime dissidents who began to emerge in the USSR after Stalin's death were also demanding the implementation of the existing constitution, or at least the observance of the rights written therein.

For just as there can be no democracy that is not secular, there can be no timid one-man regime. Fundamental concepts such as full freedom of expression, the rule of law, equal constitutional citizenship, the representation of every individual in national sovereignty, pluralism, and civil society cannot be bent or twisted through wordplay, nor are they open to negotiation. A constitution does not just mean "basic organization." 'Constitution' means the foundation and formation of the state. It does not even have to be written. How painful it is that Turkey is a beautiful example today of it not being followed even if it were carved in stone. As the CHP, we will never bow down to the bully-toned coffeehouse philosophers in the Gezi Case, the Kobani Case, the celebration of May 1st in Taksim, the strengthening of local governments and respect for the will of the voters, against censorship, against corruption, or against attempts to move away from reason, science, and secularism in education. We will never take a step back in defending rights and freedoms. We will show the same resistance to the tyranny of the mediocre, the corruption in state administration, and all despotic practices. No matter what happens, we will surely succeed in crowning our republic with democracy.
