CHP rejects Erdoğan's call for a new Constitution! 'You cannot draft a constitution with someone who does not recognize the current one'

Responding to journalists' questions on the plane while returning from his visit to Hungary, President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that it is incorrect to associate efforts for a new Constitution with his potential candidacy for re-election. Erdoğan said, "We do not want a new constitution for ourselves, but for our country. I have no concern about being re-elected or running for office again." Calling on the CHP to "Come, let us join hands" for a new constitution, Erdoğan said, "There is no problem regarding the first four articles. That is to say, as the AK Party, we have no such issue, and almost all other political parties have no such issue either. Since there is no problem regarding the first four articles, we will only determine the roadmap. We can quickly form our delegations," he said. The response to Erdoğan's call came from CHP Deputy Chairman Murat Bakan. 

"IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR US TO WORK ON A CONSTITUTION WITH THIS GOVERNMENT"

Speaking during a live broadcast on TELE1, Murat Bakan said that it is not possible to draft a constitution with this government. Bakan used the following expressions:

"The issue is not the first four articles. We are saying that we will not enter into a constitutional amendment process with this government. We are talking about a government that does not recognize the Constitution, says 'the Constitutional Court should be abolished,' does not recognize its rulings, and keeps Can Atalay in prison despite a Constitutional Court ruling. You both strain the constitutional system and then say let's draft a constitution with us... There is no point in drafting a constitution with this government. When you look at current voter preferences, the arithmetic of the Parliament does not reflect the current composition of the electorate. It is not possible for us to work on a constitution with this government. You cannot draft a constitution with a man who does not recognize the Constitution."
