CHP's number of deputies drops to 129 following Court of Cassation decision: 9 deputies' party memberships deleted

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who was reinstated as CHP Chairman by the decision of the 36th Civil Chamber of the Ankara Regional Court of Justice dated May 21, decided at a meeting held on June 10 with the newly formed Central Executive Board (MYK) to refer 9 deputies to the High Disciplinary Board (YDK) with a request for "permanent expulsion." During this process, a notable move came from the Court of Cassation before it was finalized whether the deputies in question would be expelled from the party.

The Court of Cassation changed the landscape in Parliament by deleting the CHP memberships of the 9 deputies before the YDK meeting even took place. CHP Ankara Deputy Umut Akdoğan stated in a post on his social media account that he learned his party membership had been deleted when he checked via e-Devlet. Arguing that the process in question was not legal, Akdoğan said, "What is this rush? There is an unlawful referral to the YDK. We have objected. We have the right to defense at the YDK. We have the right to appeal to the court. We are CHP members. You have set a barrier against our duties in the party, if any (I have none), due to a mistake; you cannot just delete party membership as you please."

Kılıçdaroğlu's lawyer, Celal Çelik, noted in his statement regarding the development concerning the expulsion request from the CHP that the referral decisions taken at the MYK meeting were reported to the Court of Cassation and that the deletion of memberships was a routine procedure because they were applied with precautionary measures. Çelik stated, "It is standard for the Court of Cassation to carry out this procedure until the process is finalized."

With this development, the number of CHP deputies in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey has dropped from 138 to 129. The Court of Cassation is expected to notify the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey of these proceedings, and the biographies of the 9 deputies on the TBMM website are expected to be updated to reflect them as "independent" deputies.
