Clear statement from Ekrem İmamoğlu on the diploma controversy: 'It is not me who should be on trial, but those who act unlawfully'

Republican People's Party (CHP) presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu made a new assessment regarding the diploma lawsuit filed against him. İmamoğlu pointed out that the process is being conducted far from the rule of law and that the decisions taken were made in haste. Stating that the documents submitted to the court by Istanbul University indicate that the university administration made decisions quickly and incorrectly, İmamoğlu emphasized the injustices in the system.

In a statement shared by his Presidential Campaign Office, İmamoğlu argued that the university administration, in particular, had committed a significant scandal. Regarding the documents in question, he stated, 'The university administration explains why they took the decision that the faculty should have taken with the excuse that "we would have been late." What were you going to be late for? What plan were you pursuing?'

In the same statement, Ekrem İmamoğlu also touched upon the forgery lawsuit filed against him. Stating that his documents were submitted in full and that he received his diploma after successfully completing his education, İmamoğlu asked, 'Where is the forgery in this?' Furthermore, reacting to the indictment's claim that the crime was committed 'in complicity,' İmamoğlu stated that it was not explained who else participated in this alleged crime.

Suggesting that political motives lie at the root of all investigations conducted alongside the diploma process, İmamoğlu gave the message, 'If there were even a shred of law, there would be a system today that puts on trial not me, but those who commit these unlawful acts. Those days are not far off. Because we are not afraid, we are not silent, and we never give up.'

The statements have caused the lawsuits filed against political figures in Turkey, and particularly legal practices during election processes, to be brought back to the public agenda. İmamoğlu strongly rejected all allegations directed at him and emphasized that the rule of law must be ensured.
