Coalition government in Germany being formed rapidly: Plan to tackle economic challenges
The coalition agreement between the SPD and the CDU/CSU in Germany has paved the way for the rapid formation of a new government. As Merz prepares to take office as chancellor, Klingbeil is set to be appointed finance minister. The goal is to overcome economic stagnation and prepare for trade wars.
In Germany, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) voted on Wednesday to support a coalition agreement with the conservative CDU/CSU bloc. This development marks the final step for the formation of Germany's new government.
The SPD has nominated its co-chair, Lars Klingbeil, as finance minister and vice-chancellor. This agreement clears the way for Friedrich Merz, who finished first in the early elections held in February, to become chancellor on May 6.
The SPD and the CDU/CSU refused to form a coalition with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which placed second in the elections.
Economic stagnation in Germany, rising unemployment, and the trade war initiated by US President Donald Trump with import tariffs have made the formation of a functioning government an urgent matter. For this reason, cabinet negotiations, which normally take months, were completed rapidly this time.
SPD members voted on the coalition agreement prepared by the leaders of the two parties, with 84 percent of participating members voting “yes” to the deal. SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch stated, “In such a turbulent period of global politics, we are taking office to make progress on our security, economic growth, employment, and equal opportunity.”
The new government's priority will be to revitalize Europe's largest economy. The trade war triggered by Trump's tariffs could further strain Germany's export-oriented economy. Friedrich Merz welcomed the SPD's vote on social media, stating that the broad support for the coalition agreement shows that the political center is capable of taking action and assuming responsibility.
SPD co-chair Klingbeil will be tasked with preparing the first draft of the 2025 budget. This draft will include unprecedented defense spending and a massive budget plan to pave the way for economic growth.
