'Convention' outburst in the courtroom: 'They practically begged him to say that sentence'

The hearing for the case in which CHP mayors are being tried, known in the public eye as the "Aziz İhsan Aktaş criminal organization" case, was held at the Istanbul 1st High Criminal Court. The hearing drew attention with the defense presented by Hasan Sınar, the lawyer for the detained Rıza Akpolat.

Speaking at the hearing held at the Marmara Closed Penal Execution Institution campus in Silivri, Sınar claimed that his client was pressured to testify against the CHP's 38th Ordinary Convention.

ALLEGATION OF "TESTIFY AGAINST THE CONVENTION"

According to Gazete Pencere, Attorney Prof. Dr. Hasan Sınar took the floor and, pointing to the "effective remorse" mechanism within the scope of the file, reacted to those who testified against his client.

Sınar argued that if the records of the lawyers and members of parliament who visited Akpolat in prison were examined, it would be revealed what kind of suggestions were made for him to benefit from effective remorse.

"THEY PRACTICALLY BEGGED FOR A SINGLE SENTENCE"

Stating that Rıza Akpolat is not a person who only tries to protect his own interests, Sınar argued that there are political reasons behind the case.

Reminding that Akpolat is also being tried in files related to the CHP Convention and the Provincial Congress, Sınar used the following expressions:

"They practically begged him to say just a single sentence for the convention file. In fact, the only reason for this case and the grievances experienced by so many people is that they could not bring Rıza Akpolat to his knees. They wanted to hear from him the sentence: 'Benefits were provided to delegates at the 38th Ordinary Convention where Özgür Özel was elected Chairman'."

"IF THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN THIS SENTENCE..."

Sınar claimed that if the statement in question had been given, the current case would never have been opened, saying, "If they could have gotten this sentence, the current Republican People's Party administration would not exist, and Turkey's recent political fate would have been written quite differently. Rıza Akpolat became the man who changed Turkey's recent political future by resisting with his honor."

Claiming that there are those who want to benefit from effective remorse by testifying against Akpolat, Sınar concluded his speech with these words:

"Now these people have stood up and are badmouthing Rıza Akpolat... Are you people who can compete with him? Everyone should pull themselves together and know their place."
