Date given for early elections: Attention drawn to the spring of that year!

Nefes columnist Deniz Zeyrek stated that the signals suggest the possibility that 2025 could turn into a year of preparation for elections, sharing the view that "the probability of an election in the spring of 2026 is rising." 

In his column titled "Is an early election in 2026?", Deniz Zeyrek wrote the following:

"... For elections to be renewed, it is essential for the government and the opposition to reach a joint decision.

So, can the government and the opposition reach a joint decision on an early election?

The answer:

- The opposition will not support any decision to 'renew elections' after March 2026.

- The government had planned to have the decision to renew elections made in November 2027. Due to the opposition's stance, the situation did not unfold as the government wanted.

However, President Tayyip Erdoğan (who showed his intention by announcing he wants to be a candidate again in Şanlıurfa) also needs the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) to make a decision to 'renew elections' in order to be a candidate again.

So, what will Erdoğan do when he sees that the elections cannot be held in November 2027?

In this case, he has two options:

- He will continue his term until the regular elections in 2028 and, since he will not be able to be a candidate, he will bid farewell to politics.

- He will accept the opposition's condition that 'the election will be in the spring of 2026 at the latest.'

In this case, he will be able to be a candidate again.

And if he becomes a candidate, he will do his best to win the elections.

In the corridors of Ankara, it has begun to be discussed that the AK Party has started preparing for this possibility as well.

The first signal was Erdoğan voicing his desire to be a candidate again.

Following that, his close aides began to lay the groundwork for Erdoğan's candidacy.

Now it is time to prepare the economic ground for the election.

Signals such as Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan mentioning the possibility of an interim raise for the minimum wage and the preparation of certain advantageous economic packages within the scope of the 'Year of the Family' bring to mind the possibility that 2025 could turn into a year of preparation for elections.

Meanwhile, one should not neglect elements such as the increase in corruption operations targeting CHP-run municipalities and the establishment of a comprehensive bond with Kurdish voters within the framework of the solution process.

One of the government's election signals is public opinion polls.

We have started to see headers where the message 'If anyone can solve Turkey's problems, Erdoğan can' emerges. (However, in those polls—contrary to the perception created—even though those who say 'Erdoğan can solve it' appear to be the majority, they remain at a rate of one-third. Two out of every three people asked think that Erdoğan cannot solve them.)

In the same polls, comments suggesting that developments in Syria are increasing Erdoğan's votes also draw attention.

When the perception ground for the matter is also prepared, the probability of an election in the spring of 2026 rises."
