Candidate's rights revoked in Van, where DEM swept the board: With an objection made 5 minutes before closing...
The DEM Party announced that the restored rights of Abdullah Zeydan, who was elected Co-Mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality, were revoked following an objection filed by the Ministry of Justice just 5 minutes before the end of the workday.
DEM Party won the Metropolitan Municipality in Van, as well as all 13 district municipalities, including the 3 central districts.
While Van became the only city where all municipalities are held by a single party, the DEM Party became the only party to win all municipalities in the city.
The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) announced that the restored rights of the elected Van Metropolitan Co-Mayor Abdullah Zeydan were revoked following an objection filed by the Ministry of Justice 5 minutes before the end of the workday.
According to unofficial results, in Van, Abdullah Zeydan received 220 thousand 919 votes, while AKP candidate Abdulahat Arvas received 108 thousand 802 votes.
The DEM Party announced that the restored rights of Van Metropolitan Co-Mayor candidate Abdullah Zeydan were revoked following an objection filed by the Ministry of Justice 5 minutes before the end of the workday. Previously, the Supreme Election Council (YSK) had accepted Zeydan's candidacy application.
“UNLAWFUL ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN PUT INTO ACTION”
The full statement made by the DEM Party Central Executive Committee (MYK) is as follows:
"Our party emerged from the March 31, 2024 local elections in Van with a victory rarely seen in history. The people of Van have won all 14 municipalities, including the Metropolitan Municipality, for the DEM Party, and have made it the leading party in the Provincial General Assembly by a large margin. The people of Van have reflected their will at the ballot box clearly and in the strongest possible way. This strong will is also a response to the trustee regime.
While the people have given such a clear message, new unlawful attempts are being put into action in Van.
As is known; our Van Metropolitan Co-Mayor Abdullah Zeydan completed all legal procedures and applied to the Supreme Election Council, and his candidacy was accepted by the YSK as a result of the examinations made. Zeydan was elected by receiving the support of the vast majority of the people in Van.
“THEY OBJECTED TO HIS RESTORED RIGHTS”
However, on Friday, March 29, 2024, five minutes before the end of the workday and two days before the election, the Ministry of Justice, through an administrative decision and letter, objected to the restored rights of Zeydan, who had received his restored rights in 2022 and passed all legal audits. Upon this administrative objection letter, which served as an instruction, the authorized prosecutor's office re-applied to the court that had issued the final decision on the restoration of rights. The court revoked the final decision on the restoration of rights on the same day and rejected the request for restoration of rights. Before the decision was finalized, that is, before the right to appeal and challenge could be exercised, it was immediately notified to the YSK.
“A PRODUCT OF A MENTALITY THAT DISREGARDS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE”
The same court that issued the decision accepting the restoration of the rights of our Co-Mayor Abdullah Zeydan has violated its own decision and destroyed the right to legal security. This attempt is a product of a mentality that disregards the will of the people.
“WE CALL ON THE PUBLIC TO BE SENSITIVE”
Abdullah Zeydan is the Co-Mayor of the Van Metropolitan Municipality for the people of Van. We invite everyone to respect this fact. This wrong decision must be reversed immediately. This attempt, which disregards the will of the people of Van, is unlawful. We call on the entire democratic public to be sensitive against this attempt.
The fundamental principle that creates democracies is to respect the will of the people. We invite the government to respect the will of the people! We warn those who are eager to usurp the will of our people."
WHAT DOES RESTORATION OF RIGHTS MEAN?
Restoration of rights, in other words, the restoration of banned rights, refers to the rights that a person is deprived of due to a criminal conviction, stemming from laws other than the penal code. The restoration of rights is a criminal law institution established to reclaim these rights.
