DEM Party reacts to 'closure' statements: 'Do not wag your fingers at us...'

The Co-Chairs of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) met with elected mayors at the party's headquarters.

Before the meeting held for new term planning, the party's co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan held a press conference.

Bakırhan reacted to the "party closure" debates, which began recently with statements by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli and were reignited yesterday by the words of Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç.

"CLOSURE, BLACKMAIL, THREATS"

Emphasizing that the era of threat-based politics has come to an end, Bakırhan said, "Do not wag your fingers at us. The expiration date for the politics of closure, blackmail, and threats has passed. When have we ever bowed to threats and blackmail? Now that our people have demonstrated a strong will, and with the Van resistance standing as a clear example, we will not bow to these threats and blackmail. We are determined; we will bring peace and democracy to this country."

"FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 22 YEARS, A MAJOR DEFEAT WAS INFLICTED"

Evaluating the election results, Bakırhan stated:

"The trustee-appointment mentality has lost. Our peoples have won. The trustees were buried at the ballot box. With the success of the DEM Party on March 31, the AKP-MHP government was dealt a major defeat for the first time in 22 years. The party governing Turkey became the second party by a wide margin. We invite the government and the opposition to correctly read this will on March 31. The March 31 will is a will for change. It is an election where the monist understanding was effectively defeated at the ballot box."

Speaking about the party's local policies, Tülay Hatimoğulları said:

“We will demonstrate our ecological, democratic, and women-liberatory municipal approach in the strongest way, not only in places where we won the municipalities but also in places where we are in the opposition. In the western provinces, especially wherever we are in administration, we will be partners and provide support on every issue that is in the public interest, but we will also display the most effective opposition on issues that contradict our paradigm and are not in the interest of society, workers, women, or the disabled."
