Diyanet echoes Erdoğan: Boycott support arrives in Friday sermon

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had called on citizens to exercise their "freedom not to buy" in response to rising prices following the latest cabinet meeting. Erdoğan had sent a message of fighting against opportunism, stating, "One of the most effective methods against those who sell expensive products is a boycott. Our greatest trump card against opportunists is to use our freedom not to buy."

SUPPORT FOR ERDOĞAN

Following this statement, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) gave a message in the Friday sermon parallel to this call. In the sermon read under the title "Islam is the Reason for Our Existence," emphasis was placed on honesty in trade and halal earnings. The following statements were included in the sermon:

"Islam has taught humanity the ways of earning halal income without resorting to lies, deception, and trickery; without engaging in opportunism, hoarding, and black marketeering; and without violating the rights of individuals and the public."

Furthermore, the sermon stated that Islamic values should serve as a guide in every aspect of life, saying, "We must live Islam in every moment of life, from shopping to trade, from clothing to attire, and from family life to neighborly relations."

The Diyanet's sermon was interpreted as support for Erdoğan's boycott call. The expressions in the sermon drew attention to the importance of the Islamic understanding of trade in society.
